LAGOS GOVERNMENT INTRODUCES MANDATORY APPROVAL FOR TRADITIONAL FESTIVALS

The Lagos State Government has introduced a new directive requiring organisers of all traditional festivals to obtain prior official approval before staging any cultural or religious celebrations across the state.

The policy, aimed at promoting order, safety, and cultural preservation, was announced during a stakeholders’ sensitisation programme organised by the Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture. Tagged “No Approval, No Festival,” the initiative brought together traditional rulers, worshippers, and cultural groups to educate them on the new requirements.

Officials explained that the move seeks to prevent clashes, ensure public safety, manage traffic disruptions, and maintain environmental hygiene during large gatherings. It will also help coordinate security and medical support for major events like the Eyo Festival and other indigenous celebrations.

The government emphasised that the directive is not intended to suppress cultural heritage but to regulate activities for the benefit of residents and visitors. Organisers must now submit applications detailing the nature, date, venue, and expected crowd size of their festivals well in advance.

Stakeholders welcomed the engagement while calling for a seamless approval process to avoid unnecessary delays. The Council assured participants of continuous dialogue to balance tradition with modern governance needs.

This development underscores Lagos’ commitment to harmonising its rich cultural diversity with sustainable urban management as the state continues to grow.
