Lagos State has an estimated $1 trillion untapped economic opportunity along its shoreline, according to stakeholders who have called for greater investment in the state’s coastal assets.

They said the coastline could support significant economic activities, including tourism, maritime transportation, real estate, fisheries, logistics, and other blue economy opportunities.

Stakeholders noted that Lagos’ coastal location gives the state an advantage in attracting investment and expanding businesses connected to the maritime and ocean economy.

They urged the government to develop the necessary infrastructure and regulatory frameworks to unlock the potential of the shoreline while ensuring that coastal development remains environmentally sustainable.

Experts said investment in ports, waterfront infrastructure, tourism facilities, fisheries, and marine transportation could create jobs and generate additional revenue for the state.

They also stressed the importance of protecting coastal communities and ecosystems as development projects expand.

According to stakeholders, stronger public-private partnerships could help mobilise the capital and technical expertise required to develop the shoreline into a productive economic asset.

They called for better planning and coordination among government agencies responsible for land use, environmental protection, transportation, and maritime activities.

The stakeholders said unlocking Lagos’ coastal potential could strengthen the state’s position as a major commercial and maritime hub in Africa.

They urged policymakers to adopt a long-term strategy that balances economic development with environmental protection and the interests of coastal communities.
