LAGOS LG POLLS: EX-DEPUTY GOVERNOR BUCKNOR-AKERELE DEMANDS CANCELLATION, ALLEGES PLANNED RIGGING
The local government elections in Lagos State have come under serious fire, with former Deputy Governor, Senator Kofoworola Bucknor-Akerele, calling for their immediate cancellation over alleged irregularities and rigging attempts.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Bucknor-Akerele expressed strong doubts about the integrity of the election process. She accused the organizers of attempting to manipulate the outcome in favour of a particular political party, claiming the entire process was already compromised.
“I’m calling for the cancellation of this election,” she declared. “There is a deliberate and coordinated effort to rig it in favour of one party.”
One of her main concerns was the mysterious disappearance of names from the voter register. She revealed that she personally couldn’t find her name at her polling unit — a situation she said was also faced by many other eligible voters.
“When you get to your unit, they say they already have a list of names,” she said. “I visited my polling unit, and my name was not on the list.”
Beyond missing names, Bucknor-Akerele also reported disturbances at some polling centres and accused election officials of actively working to disenfranchise voters.
Her statements come amid already low voter turnout, with many Lagos residents choosing to stay away from the polls due to what they describe as a lack of faith in the system.
As calls for transparency grow louder and allegations continue to surface, the credibility of the entire local election process in Lagos is being called into serious question. Whether electoral officials will respond to these demands remains to be seen — but one thing is clear: public trust in grassroots democracy is quickly wearing thin.
