LAGOS OPENS 2027 BUDGET PROCESS TO PUBLIC INPUT

The Lagos State Government has commenced preparations for its 2027 budget by opening consultations with residents and other stakeholders across the state. The exercise, being coordinated by the Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, is designed to gather suggestions on the projects, programmes and policies residents believe should receive priority in the coming fiscal year.

The consultation programme is scheduled to cover Lagos’ five administrative divisions, popularly known as IBILE — Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island and Epe. The first engagement is scheduled for September 7 in Ikeja Division, with proceedings beginning at 10am at the Multipurpose Hall, Radio Lagos, Agidingbi. Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Ope George, is expected to lead officials of the ministry during the engagement.

According to the state government, the consultations are intended to ensure that budget decisions are influenced by the actual needs of communities rather than being determined solely within government offices. Residents will have the opportunity to highlight challenges in their areas and recommend specific projects, programmes and policies they want reflected in the 2027 Appropriation Bill.

The government said the exercise will bring together a broad range of participants, including traditional rulers, Community Development Committees and Associations, professional organisations, religious groups, civil society organisations, trade associations, youth and women groups, private-sector representatives and people living with disabilities. Members of the general public are also encouraged to participate and present issues affecting their communities.

Residents who are unable to attend the physical meetings will also be allowed to participate virtually by indicating their interest and stating the division they belong to through the ministry's designated email channel. The state government said the feedback gathered during the consultations would help identify the specific development priorities of each division and improve the alignment between public spending and the needs of Lagos residents.
