LAGOS POSTS 61.52% WASSCE SUCCESS, PAYS ₦1.4BN WAEC FEES FOR 45,598 STUDENTS
Lagos State has recorded a 61.52% success rate in the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), with students achieving credits in five subjects including English and Mathematics.
The state government also announced that it spent ₦1.4 billion to pay WAEC registration fees for 45,598 public school students who sat for the examination.
Announcing the results, the Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamila Ibrahim, described the performance as a significant improvement compared to previous years. She attributed the success to sustained investment in teacher training, provision of learning materials, and improved monitoring of schools.
Out of the 45,598 students sponsored by the state, 28,049 candidates obtained credits in five subjects or more, including English Language and Mathematics. This represents the 61.52% pass rate.
The commissioner praised the dedication of teachers and the hard work of the students, noting that the results reflect the positive impact of various education reforms introduced by the Lagos State Government.
She also highlighted the state’s commitment to free and accessible education, stating that paying the WAEC fees for public school students remains a top priority to reduce the financial burden on parents and ensure no child is left behind.
Education stakeholders in the state have welcomed the results, though some have called for more efforts to push the success rate higher in the coming years. They noted that while 61.52% is commendable, there is still room for improvement, especially in science subjects and overall performance in rural and underserved areas.
The Lagos State Government says it will continue to invest in school infrastructure, teacher welfare, and student support programmes to build on this year’s achievement.
For many parents and students in Lagos, this year’s WASSCE result brings relief and hope, especially as thousands of candidates look forward to gaining admission into higher institutions.
