LAGOS RESIDENTS ALLEGE BUILDINGS BLOCKING DRAINAGE CHANNELS

Residents in several parts of Lagos State have raised concerns over alleged illegal construction activities blocking natural drainage channels, exacerbating flooding during the rainy season.

Community leaders claim that some developers are constructing buildings on or near waterways and drainage paths, obstructing the free flow of water and contributing to recurrent flooding in residential areas. They have called on the state government to investigate and take decisive action against violators.

The Lagos State Ministry of the Environment has acknowledged the complaints and promised to investigate the allegations. Officials warned that building on drainage channels and floodplains is illegal and poses serious risks to public safety and infrastructure.

Environmental experts have stressed the importance of preserving natural water channels and enforcing building regulations to mitigate the impact of flooding. They urged residents to report suspected violations and cooperate with government agencies during enforcement operations.

The state government has reiterated its commitment to demolishing structures obstructing drainage systems and implementing long-term solutions to address flooding in Lagos.
