LEKKI PORT OPERATORS RAISE ALARM OVER GROWING TRAFFIC GRIDLOCK
Stakeholders operating around the Lekki Port corridor in Lagos State have expressed concern over worsening traffic congestion in the area, saying the situation is increasingly affecting the movement of cargo and people. The growing queues of trucks and other vehicles have created delays along major access routes leading to the port.
The congestion has been attributed largely to the increasing movement of trucks into and out of the port, combined with limitations on the available road infrastructure. Motorists and residents in surrounding communities have complained about spending long hours on the road, while businesses operating around the corridor have also experienced difficulties moving goods and accessing their premises.
Port operators and logistics stakeholders said the situation could undermine the efficiency of activities at the facility if urgent measures are not taken. They noted that prolonged delays increase transportation costs for businesses, affect delivery schedules and can also add to the overall cost of moving cargo through the port.
The stakeholders called for improved traffic management and better coordination among agencies responsible for regulating truck movement in the area. They also urged the authorities to accelerate work on critical access roads and introduce measures that would reduce the concentration of trucks on the roads during peak periods.
They stressed that an efficient road network around Lekki Port is important to the success of the facility and the wider economic activities in the Lekki corridor. According to them, resolving the congestion would improve cargo movement, reduce losses for transport operators and businesses, and make the port more attractive to importers, exporters and investors.
