MAN AND TEENAGE GIRL MISSING AFTER FLOOD SWEEPS THEM AWAY IN ABA
A man and a teenage girl remain missing after they were swept away by floodwater near a construction site on Faulks Road in Aba, Abia State.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chinaka, confirmed that the incident happened around the popular Ukwu Mango area during Sunday’s heavy rainfall.
According to Chinaka, the girl was walking through the area when she reportedly struck a stone and fell into an uncovered ditch that had filled with rainwater.
A man who witnessed the incident entered the water to rescue her, but both were swept away.
Chinaka said police had received a report and that efforts to locate the pair were continuing.
“Unfortunately, we have not been able to see them,” she said, adding that rescue efforts were underway.
Responding to questions about whether the construction company could face charges over possible negligence, the police spokesperson said investigations were ongoing.
The incident has raised concerns about uncovered excavations around construction sites, particularly during heavy rain when floodwater can conceal dangerous openings.
Neither the man nor the girl had been found at the time of the police update.
