April 21, 2025 – Minna, Niger State

A tragic incident unfolded in Niger State on Sunday evening as a young man was reportedly stabbed to death by suspected thugs while assisting local vigilante operatives in the fight against criminal activity.

The victim, identified as Abdulrahman Yusuf, aged 28, was said to be helping the vigilante group in the Tunga area of Minna, the state capital, when he was ambushed by a group of armed hoodlums suspected to be behind recent robberies and street violence in the area.

Eyewitnesses said Abdulrahman, a well-known resident and motorcycle mechanic, had been volunteering with the local security outfit over the past few months in a bid to help restore peace in his community.

“He was just trying to support the vigilantes to chase away these boys who have been terrorizing us,” said Musa Garba, a resident of the area. “They lured him to a corner and stabbed him multiple times before fleeing.”

Abdulrahman was rushed to the Ibrahim Babangida Specialist Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival due to severe internal bleeding.

Community in Mourning

The Tunga community has been left shaken by the incident. Locals described Abdulrahman as a humble and courageous young man who wanted a safer neighborhood for everyone.

"He wasn’t even a full member of the vigilante group. He was just helping out because he wanted peace," said Zainab Abdullahi, a neighbor. “Now we’ve lost someone good because criminals keep getting bolder.”

Police Reaction and Investigation

The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the incident and assured residents that investigations are underway to apprehend those responsible.

“We are actively pursuing leads and working with the vigilante group to identify the assailants,” said DSP Wasiu Abiodun, the command’s spokesperson. “We urge residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies.”

So far, no arrests have been made, but police say they are closing in on suspects believed to be part of a gang that has been operating in the area.

Renewed Calls for Security Support

The tragic death has sparked renewed calls from community leaders and residents for increased government support for grassroots security initiatives.

“Vigilantes are doing their best, but without proper backing and equipment, they’re exposed to danger,” said Alhaji Suleiman Bako, a local elder. “What happened to Abdulrahman could happen to anyone trying to do good.”

Several youths in the area held a peaceful procession on Monday morning in honor of the late Abdulrahman, calling for justice and better protection for community volunteers.

A Life Cut Short

Abdulrahman Yusuf is survived by his parents and two younger siblings. His burial took place earlier today in accordance with Islamic rites, amid tears and calls for justice.

As Niger State continues to grapple with security challenges, his death is a stark reminder of the growing risks faced by everyday citizens stepping up to protect their communities.
