State Ministry of Information confirms widespread displacement and destruction of homes and farmlands while urging residents in riverine lowlands to evacuate to safer grounds

The Nasarawa State Government has confirmed the death of two persons and the displacement of hundreds of residents following severe flooding that submerged over 18 communities across the Doma Local Government Area of the state.

Providing official details on the natural disaster, the Nasarawa State Commissioner for Information, Culture, and Tourism, Dr. Ibrahim Uthman Aboki, revealed that the massive flooding heavily impacted the Ekye Development Area.

The disaster destroyed numerous residential structures, displaced agrarian families, and washed away vast expanses of cultivated farmlands, severely compromising agricultural livelihoods across the riverine belt.

Government officials expressed concern that floodwaters originating from the overflow of the River Benue could worsen if excess water is discharged from the Lagdo Dam in neighboring Cameroon, potentially escalating the scale of destruction.

Addressing emergency relief measures, state authorities assured affected communities that emergency response teams are preparing medical assistance and essential relief materials to prevent secondary health crises, such as disease outbreaks, in displaced persons' settlements.

The Nasarawa State Government reiterated advisories previously issued by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), strongly urging residents remaining along flood-prone lowlands to immediately relocate to higher ground until water levels recede safely.
