MAY DAY MESSAGE: FUBARA COMMENDS WORKERS, URGES LABOUR REFORM
Suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has applauded the enduring spirit and commitment of the state’s workforce, describing them as vital to the progress and resilience of the state in the face of political turmoil.
Fubara made this known in a Workers’ Day solidarity message released Thursday in Port Harcourt by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi.
Despite his current political suspension, the governor praised workers across the state for their patriotism and dedication, stating that their efforts continue to uphold governance and development.
“This year’s theme, ‘Ensuring Safety and Health at Work in a Changing Climate’, draws attention to the urgent need to safeguard employees amid increasing environmental and socio-political threats,” the statement noted.
He emphasized that workers' well-being and workplace safety must be prioritized as foundational elements of long-term growth and development.
Fubara also commended President Bola Tinubu’s administration for its progress in labour reforms and initiatives that promote environmentally responsible workplace policies.
According to the statement, “Governor Fubara deeply appreciates the steadfastness of Rivers workers, who, despite political instability and administrative disruptions, continue to serve with honour and commitment. Their resilience remains the bedrock of the state's continued advancement.”
Reiterating his administration’s support for labour welfare, Fubara urged all employers — both governmental and private — to fully comply with labour laws and protect the rights and dignity of every worker.
He advocated for continuous enhancement of working conditions to meet both statutory obligations and ethical standards, encouraging collective responsibility in promoting a healthier work environment.
Fubara concluded his address with words of encouragement for the people of Rivers State, urging them to remain hopeful and united. He also prayed for divine guidance for leaders at all levels and affirmed his government’s ongoing dedication to fostering a work culture grounded in respect, opportunity, and shared prosperity.
“We must hold on to hope and unity,” he said, “because in the end, justice, peace, and progress will triumph.”
