MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES FORWARD BRANDON CLARKE DIES AT 29, NBA COMMUNITY PAYS EMOTIONAL TRIBUTE
The Memphis Grizzlies have announced the death of forward Brandon Clarke at the age of 29, sending shockwaves across the basketball community.
The NBA side confirmed the tragic news in a short statement released on Tuesday, May 12, though no cause of death was disclosed.
“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Brandon Clarke,” the club said. “Brandon was an outstanding teammate and an even better person whose impact on the organization and the greater Memphis community will not be forgotten.”
Clarke’s management agency, Priority Sports, also expressed deep sorrow over his passing, describing the late basketball star as a caring and compassionate person.
“He was the gentlest soul, who was the first to be there for all of his friends and family,” the company said in a statement.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver paid tribute to Clarke, describing him as a respected figure within the league and a player who brought passion and toughness to the game.
“We are devastated to learn of the passing of Brandon Clarke,” Silver said. “As one of the longest-tenured members of the Grizzlies, Brandon was a beloved teammate and leader who played the game with enormous passion and grit.”
Clarke spent his entire NBA career with the Memphis Grizzlies after being selected 21st overall in the 2019 NBA Draft. He quickly became an important part of the team, earning NBA All-Rookie honours during his debut season and establishing himself as one of Memphis’ most reliable forwards.
In 2022, the franchise rewarded his performances with a four-year contract extension worth $50 million, reflecting the club’s confidence in his future and leadership qualities.
However, injuries affected the latter stages of his career. Clarke struggled with recurring calf and knee issues, limiting his appearances over recent seasons. He featured in just six games during the 2023/2024 campaign before making a stronger return the following season with 64 appearances. This season, he managed only two games due to ongoing fitness setbacks.
His death comes weeks after reports emerged that he had been arrested in Arkansas on allegations including possession of a controlled substance and fleeing from police while speeding.
Tributes have continued to pour in from across the basketball world as fans, teammates, and league officials mourn the loss of one of the NBA’s respected figures.
