MESSI HEADLINES ARGENTINA’S PRELIMINARY SQUAD FOR 2026 WORLD CUP TITLE DEFENCE
Lionel Messi has been named in Argentina’s provisional 55-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, keeping alive expectations that the legendary forward could feature in a sixth appearance at football’s biggest tournament.
The reigning world champions are already intensifying preparations for the competition, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. While Messi is yet to officially confirm whether he will continue beyond the tournament, the 38-year-old remains central to Argentina’s plans as they seek to defend the crown they won in Qatar.
Messi played a decisive role during the qualification campaign, finishing as Argentina’s leading scorer with eight goals in 12 matches for the national team.
Head coach Lionel Scaloni also included attacking stars Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez in the extended squad as the South Americans begin final evaluations ahead of the tournament.
Dybala Misses Out
One of the biggest talking points from the squad announcement is the absence of Paulo Dybala. The forward, who was part of Argentina’s World Cup-winning squad in 2022, has not featured for the national side since 2024 and was left out of the provisional selection.
Defender Cristian Romero retained his place despite ongoing fitness concerns after being sidelined since April with a knee injury.
Argentina also handed opportunities to rising talents Alejandro Garnacho and Nico Paz, while uncapped defender Zaid Romero earned a surprise inclusion.
Prestianni Faces Possible Ban
Benfica youngster Gianluca Prestianni was also selected but could miss part of the tournament after receiving a suspension linked to an incident involving Vinícius Júnior during a UEFA Champions League match.
UEFA issued the winger a six-game ban, with three matches suspended, and FIFA later confirmed that the punishment would extend worldwide.
Argentina are scheduled to begin their World Cup campaign against Algeria on June 16 before taking on Austria and Jordan in Group J.
