META APPS CONTRIBUTE $820 MILLION ANNUALLY TO NIGERIA’S ECONOMY, REPORT FINDS
Meta’s platforms, including Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, now contribute approximately $820 million to Nigeria’s economy every year, a new report has revealed.
The report, released on Thursday, highlights the growing economic importance of Meta’s apps in Nigeria, Africa’s largest digital market. The contribution comes mainly from business activities, advertising revenue, creator earnings, and improved productivity across various sectors.
According to the study, millions of Nigerian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) use Meta platforms to reach customers, sell products, and grow their businesses. Many traders, fashion designers, food vendors, and service providers now depend on WhatsApp and Instagram to connect directly with buyers, reducing the cost of doing business.
The report also shows that Meta’s platforms support over 1.2 million jobs in Nigeria, both directly and indirectly. These include roles in digital marketing, content creation, customer support, and logistics for online businesses. Young Nigerians, especially, are using these apps to build careers as influencers, freelancers, and online entrepreneurs.
Meta’s Regional Director for West Africa welcomed the findings and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s digital economy. He noted that investments in local infrastructure, such as data centres and connectivity projects, are helping to improve user experience while contributing to economic growth.
Nigeria has one of the highest social media populations in Africa, with over 30 million active users on Meta platforms. As more people move online for business and communication, the economic value of these tools continues to rise.
The $820 million annual contribution underlines the important role technology platforms play in driving Nigeria’s economy. As digital adoption grows, experts believe this figure will continue to increase, creating more opportunities for businesses and young people across the country.
