MICHAEL JACKSON BIOPIC EYES BOX OFFICE SUCCESS DESPITE ABUSE ALLEGATIONS
A new biopic about Michael Jackson is projected to achieve major box office success, despite longstanding child sexual abuse allegations that continue to surround the late “King of Pop.”
The film, titled Michael and produced by Lionsgate, is expected to generate up to $700 million globally, with its world premiere scheduled in Berlin.
If achieved, the figure would place it among the highest-grossing music biopics, behind only Bohemian Rhapsody, which earned $910 million worldwide.
The film is part of a broader and thriving commercial legacy tied to Jackson’s name. Stage productions like MJ: The Musical and the long-running Las Vegas show Michael Jackson ONE continue to draw audiences globally.
Even years after he died in 2009, Jackson remains one of the highest-earning deceased celebrities, consistently topping revenue rankings and maintaining a massive global streaming presence.
Industry observers say his brand has, in some ways, grown stronger posthumously, partly due to reduced exposure to controversy compared to when he was alive.
However, Jackson’s legacy remains complex. While he was acquitted in a 2005 criminal trial, allegations of abuse have persisted, with additional civil cases filed after his death. Notably, these controversies are reportedly absent from the new film, which was produced with the Jackson family's involvement.
Experts suggest this reflects a broader trend in Hollywood, where biopics often focus on achievements rather than deeply exploring controversies.
Despite this, fan support remains strong, and analysts believe the film's enduring global fan base will play a key role in driving its commercial success.
