The Nigerian Army has called on Plateau State lawmakers to actively lead peacebuilding efforts in their local constituencies, stressing that security is a shared responsibility.

Major General Folusho Oyinlola, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division of the Nigerian Army and Commander of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), made this appeal during a courtesy visit by the leadership of the Plateau State House of Assembly. The delegation was led by the new Speaker, Rt. Hon. Naanlong Daniel, at the Division headquarters in Rukuba, Bassa LGA.

Oyinlola emphasized that while the military continues to address insecurity through both armed (kinetic) and dialogue-based (non-kinetic) strategies, political leaders must also play their part by initiating grassroots peace efforts in their various communities.

“We must unite in our peacebuilding programs, which are crucial for the long-term stability of Plateau State,” he said.

In his remarks, Speaker Naanlong Daniel appreciated the efforts of the military in safeguarding lives and property across the state. He said the purpose of the visit was to strengthen ties between the military and the state legislature, especially in the face of growing security challenges.

“We are not here to point fingers,” the Speaker said. “We are here to strengthen collaboration and support solutions.”

He also proposed the creation of a Crisis Resolution Committee to help settle disputes and mediate grievances among the state’s diverse communities, especially in rural and conflict-prone areas.

Major General Oyinlola welcomed the idea of the crisis committee and reaffirmed the military’s commitment to work closely with the state government and local stakeholders to promote peace.

He further noted that the state must adopt inclusive policies to ensure that no community feels abandoned—particularly those often ignored outside election seasons.

The GOC also acknowledged the tough realities faced by security operatives in volatile regions and stressed the importance of community cooperation, political will, and sustained support to succeed in peacekeeping.

The interactive session between the lawmakers and military officials concluded on a hopeful note, with both sides agreeing to deepen collaboration for the sake of Plateau’s stability and progress.

This renewed synergy offers a fresh chance to tackle insecurity head-on—not just with weapons, but with unity and dialogue.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
