MONTHLY ENVIRONMENTAL SANITATION TO RESUME IN LAGOS APRIL 25
The Lagos State Government has announced that the monthly environmental sanitation exercise will resume on Saturday, April 25, 2026.
The announcement was made in a statement by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab.
According to the commissioner, the sanitation exercise will take place on the last Saturday of every month from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. as part of the government’s renewed effort to promote a cleaner and healthier environment across the state.
The monthly sanitation programme was previously suspended in November 2016 during the administration of former governor Akinwunmi Ambode. Prior to its suspension, the exercise was held on the last Saturday of every month between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.
The programme was halted after the Lagos Court of Appeal ruled that restricting residents’ movement during sanitation hours was unlawful and infringed on citizens’ fundamental rights.
In 2024, the state government began exploring the possibility of reintroducing the sanitation exercise due to rising environmental concerns across Lagos. Authorities clarified at the time that the revived programme would not include movement restrictions but would instead rely on the voluntary participation of residents.
Confirming the development, Wahab stated that the exercise will officially recommence on Saturday, April 25, 2026.
“I am pleased to inform all Lagosians that the monthly environmental sanitation exercise will resume effective Saturday, April 25, 2026, and will hold on the last Saturday of every month from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.,” the statement said.
Residents have been encouraged to actively participate by cleaning their surroundings, clearing drainage channels around their homes, and ensuring proper waste disposal.
Officials noted that the initiative is designed to encourage citizens to take greater responsibility for maintaining a clean environment while also helping to reduce flooding and other environmental challenges in the state.
The government further stressed that community cooperation is essential to achieving a cleaner and more flood-resilient city.
“During this period, residents are encouraged to clean their surroundings, clear drainage channels in front of their homes, and dispose of waste properly as part of their civic responsibility. This exercise is a collective duty and an important step toward building a cleaner, healthier, and flood-resilient Lagos. It will also be supported by the full enforcement capacity of the Lagos State Government,” the statement added.
