A mother and her child have lost their lives after two trucks carrying 20-foot containers overturned at Mile 2, near Freeman Market, on the route towards Apapa in Lagos.

The victims became trapped beneath the trucks and containers during the incident over the weekend.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority said its rescue and recovery teams responded to evacuate the victims and clear the wreckage.

Officers temporarily closed the affected section of the road and diverted vehicles through a nearby service lane to reduce congestion and prevent further crashes.

A crane and a heavy-duty tow vehicle were deployed to lift the trucks and remove their cargo, while police officers secured the scene.

The victims’ remains were taken to the police mortuary in Yaba.

LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki expressed sadness over the deaths and called for a thorough investigation into the cause.

He urged investigators to examine possible mechanical faults, overloading, uneven cargo distribution and driver negligence, without identifying any of these as an established cause.

Bakare-Oki also appealed to truck operators to maintain their vehicles, properly secure containers and comply with road safety requirements.

The identities of the mother and child were not included in the account provided.
