MULTICHOICE CUTS DECODER PRICES AFTER LOSING 1.4 MILLION SUBSCRIBERS
MultiChoice Nigeria, the operator of DStv and GOtv, has announced a 50% reduction in the cost of its decoders amid ongoing scrutiny by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), which is moving to arraign the company's Chief Executive Officer, John Ugbe, over alleged obstruction of investigation and other issues.
In a statement released on Tuesday and signed by Ugbe, the company confirmed the price cut, citing the current economic challenges facing many Nigerians as the reason for the adjustment.
“We want to ensure our customers feel appreciated and have access to the best entertainment every day,” the statement added.
The FCCPC had earlier filed charges seeking to prosecute Ugbe and other senior executives of the company over their alleged efforts to obstruct an investigation.
Additionally, on May 8, 2025, the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed a suit filed by MultiChoice Nigeria Limited, which sought to uphold recent subscription price increases for DStv and GOtv. The ruling favored the FCCPC’s stance against arbitrary hikes in subscription costs.
The company has also suffered a significant drop in its subscriber base, losing approximately 1.4 million customers between March 2023 and March 2025 — a decline largely attributed to multiple price increases over the past two years.
MultiChoice Nigeria had adjusted its DStv and GOtv package prices three times within a 12-month span: in April 2023, November 2023, and most recently in April 2024, with the latest hike taking effect on May 1.
