MUTATI REFLECTS ON FIVE YEARS OF DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION AS HE EXITS TECHNOLOGY MINISTRY
Former Minister of Technology and Science, Alexander Mutati, has reflected on his five-year journey in government as he steps down from the ministry.
Mutati said he is proud of the progress made in pushing Zambia’s digital agenda during his time in office. He highlighted key achievements including improved internet connectivity, expansion of digital services, and the laying of foundations for a stronger technology-driven economy.
Speaking during his farewell, Mutati noted that when he assumed office, many parts of Zambia had limited access to reliable internet and digital government services. He said his team worked hard to change this situation through various reforms and infrastructure projects.
Some of the notable steps taken under his leadership include the expansion of fibre optic networks, the introduction of more e-government services, and partnerships with local and international tech companies to boost innovation and skills development among Zambian youths.
Mutati admitted that challenges remain, especially in rural areas where connectivity is still poor. However, he expressed confidence that the foundation laid over the past five years will make it easier for the next minister to build on the gains.
He thanked President Hakainde Hichilema and the Zambian people for the opportunity to serve, describing his time in the ministry as one of the most fulfilling periods of his public service career.
The former minister urged the incoming leadership to continue prioritising digital transformation, saying it is critical for Zambia’s economic growth, job creation, and service delivery to citizens.
Mutati’s exit marks the end of an important chapter in Zambia’s digital journey. Many in the tech community credit him with bringing new energy and focus to the sector.
