MY FATHER REGRETTED FUNDING MY EDUCATION AFTER I BECAME A SKIT MAKER – SABINUS
Nigerian comedian Emmanuel Ejekwu, popularly known as Sabinus, has opened up about his father’s initial disapproval of his career choice.
In a recent interview with VJ Adams, Sabinus revealed that his father had hoped he would become a lawyer. However, after failing to gain admission into law school, he opted to study Linguistics and Communication Studies at the University of Port Harcourt.
It was during his time at university that he discovered his talent for comedy and began creating skits. Sabinus shared that his father regretted funding his education once he learned about his career, describing skit making as a “stupid business.”
He said, “At first, my dad never wanted me to be what I am today; he wanted me to be a lawyer. I tried my best but couldn’t get admission, so I settled for Linguistics and Communication Studies at Uniport. On campus, I discovered skit making and decided to give it a try. At first, money wasn’t coming.
“After graduation, my dad didn’t know I was a comedian because I was keeping it from him. It was a year later that he started seeing me on comedy show posters, and my sisters confirmed it to him. He was furious. He said, ‘Which comedy? Stupid business. Look at the boy I sent to become a lawyer.’”
Sabinus added that over time, his father gave him his blessings after seeing him succeed and even gift him money from his comedy earnings.
