NADECO REJECTS ABDULSALAMI’S CLAIMS ON ABIOLA, MILITARY RULE
The National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) has rejected recent claims attributed to former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, regarding the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola and issues surrounding Nigeria’s military rule.
The pro-democracy group described the remarks as inaccurate and inconsistent with historical events linked to the June 12 struggle and the nation’s transition to democratic governance.
NADECO maintained that the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists, civil society groups, and ordinary Nigerians should not be diminished or misrepresented in discussions about the period.
According to the coalition, the June 12 movement remains a defining chapter in Nigeria’s democratic history and must be accurately documented for future generations.
The group emphasized the role played by Chief MKO Abiola, widely regarded as the winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, in shaping the country’s democratic journey.
NADECO further argued that historical accounts of military rule should reflect the experiences of those who fought for democratic governance during that era.
Political observers note that debates over the legacy of June 12 and Nigeria’s transition from military to civilian rule continue to generate strong reactions among stakeholders.
Historians and democracy advocates have called for continued efforts to preserve accurate records of the country’s political evolution.
The exchange has reignited public discussions about the events leading to the restoration of democratic rule and the contributions of key actors involved.
Stakeholders say open dialogue and historical accuracy remain essential in understanding Nigeria’s democratic development.
