NAF AND FAAN TEST AIRPORT EMERGENCY READINESS IN BENIN

The Nigerian Air Force and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria have strengthened their collaboration on aviation safety following a joint fire emergency drill conducted at Benin Airport in Edo State.

The exercise was organised by the Nigerian Air Force’s 107 Air Maritime Group in collaboration with FAAN as part of efforts to improve the ability of relevant agencies to respond quickly and effectively to emergencies at the airport.

The third-quarter fire emergency drill rehearsal was held on Friday, August 28, 2026, and was designed to assess the preparedness of emergency response personnel and test the effectiveness of existing procedures for dealing with fire incidents.

According to the Nigerian Air Force, the exercise focused on protecting passengers, airport workers and critical infrastructure in the event of an emergency.

During the simulated incident, participating agencies activated several emergency response procedures, including emergency communication, evacuation of affected areas, firefighting operations and post-incident assessment.

The exercise provided personnel with an opportunity to practise their response under simulated emergency conditions while identifying possible gaps that could affect the effectiveness of future operations.

The Nigerian Air Force said the drill also strengthened cooperation between the 107 Air Maritime Group and FAAN, particularly in the areas of coordination and interoperability during emergencies.

The joint exercise is expected to improve communication between the two agencies and ensure that emergency responders can work together more efficiently when dealing with incidents at the airport.

Airport emergencies such as fires require rapid coordination because delays in evacuation, communication or firefighting efforts can put passengers, workers and airport infrastructure at serious risk.

The rehearsal therefore served as both a preparedness exercise and an opportunity for the agencies to evaluate their existing emergency response arrangements.

The NAF said the exercise would help participating agencies identify areas requiring improvement and strengthen their ability to respond to potential incidents.

The collaboration between the Air Force and FAAN also reflects the importance of inter-agency cooperation in maintaining safety at Nigeria’s airports.

With Benin Airport serving passengers and supporting aviation activities in Edo State, maintaining effective emergency procedures remains essential to ensuring safe airport operations.

The Nigerian Air Force reaffirmed its commitment to supporting measures aimed at protecting lives and improving safety standards within the aviation environment.

The agencies are expected to continue conducting similar exercises to maintain operational readiness and ensure that emergency personnel remain prepared to respond effectively whenever an actual incident occurs.
