NASARAWA LP FACTION DISTRIBUTES FREE GOVERNORSHIP, SENATORIAL FORMS TO ASPIRANTS
A faction of the Labour Party in Nasarawa State loyal to Julius Abure has begun distributing free expression of interest and nomination forms to party members seeking elective offices ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The state chairman of the faction, Alexander Ombugu, disclosed this during a press briefing at the party secretariat in Lafia on Friday.
According to him, the free forms cover governorship, senatorial, House of Representatives, and House of Assembly positions.
Ombugu said the initiative was designed to ease the financial burden on aspirants amid prevailing economic challenges and ensure that qualified individuals are not excluded from the political process because of their financial status.
“We are aware that many political parties put their expression of interest and nomination forms at a higher price. But the Labour Party belongs to the people. It is a party of all, that is why our logo indicates Papa, Mama, and Pikin,” he said.
The chairman maintained that his faction remains the authentic leadership of the party in Nasarawa State and would continue preparations for the 2027 elections despite the ongoing leadership dispute involving Julius Abure and Nenadi Usman.
He urged politicians with integrity and leadership capacity to obtain the forms and participate in the party’s primary elections.
Ombugu announced that the party’s governorship and House of Assembly primaries would be held on May 27, while the Senate and House of Representatives primaries are scheduled for May 29.
He also disclosed that the party would conduct a primary election on May 25 to select its candidate for the upcoming Nasarawa North Senatorial District by-election scheduled by the Independent National Electoral Commission for June 20, 2026.
The by-election became necessary following the death of Senator Godiya Akwashiki.
Meanwhile, Labour Party governorship aspirant Ibrahim Afaka pledged to tackle unemployment and insecurity if elected governor in 2027.
Afaka criticised the administration of the ruling All Progressives Congress in Nasarawa State, alleging that it had failed to meet the expectations of residents.
The Labour Party continues to grapple with a prolonged leadership crisis at the national level, with both the Abure and Nenadi Usman factions maintaining separate political activities and preparations for future elections across the country.
