NASARAWA SENATOR ONAWO DUMPS PDP, CITES PERSONAL REASONS
The senator representing Nasarawa South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Ogoshi Onawo, has formally resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Onawo announced his decision in a resignation letter dated January 10, 2026, which was addressed to the Chairman of the PDP in Galadimawa Ward, Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. He stated that his resignation took immediate effect.
In the letter, the federal lawmaker wrote, “I write to formally notify you of my resignation as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Galadimawa Ward, Doma Local Government Area, with effect from today, 10th January, 2026.”
The senator explained that his decision to leave the party was based solely on personal considerations, stressing that it was not influenced by external pressure or immediate political developments within the party.
“This decision has been taken after careful consideration and is purely for personal reasons,” he stated.
Onawo used the opportunity to express appreciation to the PDP leadership at all levels, as well as party members and supporters, for the opportunity to serve under the party’s platform. He acknowledged the role the party played in his political journey and the trust reposed in him over the years.
“I wish to sincerely thank the party leadership, members, and supporters for the opportunity and platform afforded me over the years to serve my people in various capacities,” the senator said.
He further expressed gratitude for the cooperation and support he enjoyed during his time in the PDP, describing it as instrumental to his ability to represent his constituents effectively in the National Assembly.
“I remain deeply grateful for the trust, cooperation, and support I received throughout my time in the party. Please accept my appreciation and best wishes for the continued progress and success of the party,” he added.
Although Onawo did not disclose his next political move or officially announce his new political affiliation, he has been linked to the African Democratic Congress. Reports indicate that the senator was sighted at an ADC meeting in July 2025, a development that has continued to fuel speculation about his possible defection to the party.
His resignation adds to the growing list of high-profile political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, as parties and politicians reposition themselves across the country.
