Following what many have described as one of the most dramatic escape acts in Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) history, Nasarawa United have begun contract extension talks with Salisu Yusuf, the former Super Eagles coach who masterminded their top-flight survival.

Despite a 2-1 loss to Rivers United in Port Harcourt on the final day of the season, the Solid Miners had already secured their NPFL status after a crucial win in their penultimate game, finishing the 2024/25 campaign 12th on the table with 52 points.

A Proven Tactician at the Helm

Yusuf, a seasoned tactician with stints at Rangers, Enyimba, and Rivers United, took over the struggling Lafia-based side mid-season and led a remarkable turnaround. Under his leadership, the club rose from the brink of relegation to mid-table stability, earning admiration from both fans and club executives.

“He’s brought experience, discipline, and structure to the team,” said a top Nasarawa United official. “We believe that, given another full season, he can take us even higher.”

Contract Talks Near Completion

Negotiations between the club and the veteran coach are reported to be at an advanced stage, with around 80% of the terms already agreed. According to inside sources, Yusuf is pleased with the offer on the table, and only a few final details remain before the agreement is signed and sealed.

“Talks have been very productive,” a senior club official confirmed. “We’re optimistic the deal will be finalized soon so we can begin preparations for the new season.”

Nasarawa United’s management sees Yusuf as central to the club’s ambitions for the 2025/26 NPFL season, aiming not just for survival, but for a stronger league finish and potential continental push.

“Salisu Yusuf has shown what he can do in difficult situations. With full preseason planning, squad reinforcements, and board support, he could lead us to something special,” the club official added.
