NATASHA AKPOTI-UDUAGHAN RESUMES SENATE DUTIES AS SUSPENSION IS LIFTED

After six months of suspension, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has officially returned to the Senate, marking a dramatic new chapter in her political journey.

The Senator representing Kogi Central regained access to her office on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, after security operatives unsealed it on the orders of the Sergeant-at-Arms of the National Assembly. Her supporters, who accompanied her, described the moment as a victory not only for Natasha but also for resilience and democratic representation.

Her suspension, which began on March 6, 2025, followed heated disagreements over Senate sitting arrangements and her accusations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The decision sparked widespread criticism from political observers, rights advocates, and opposition figures who warned that silencing her risked worsening gender and democratic fault lines in the Senate.

In her first remarks, Natasha struck a defiant tone:

“I have no apology to tender. We survived recall, blackmail, and suspension. No one is more Nigerian than us, and Senator Akpabio is not more of a senator than I am. It is unfortunate to have a National Assembly run by such a dictator.”

While her fiery style has made her a prominent voice for governance and women in leadership, it has also unsettled the establishment. Analysts warn that unless she tempers her approach, she could again face clashes with Senate leadership.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar hailed her return as a victory against political intimidation, linking her suspension to broader patterns of authoritarianism under the current administration. Activist Aisha Yesufu accused the Senate of allowing itself to be used, while legal experts stressed that Natasha must also abide by Senate rules to protect her seat.

Public Affairs Analyst Dr. Nduka Odo advised Natasha to “play a smarter game” and avoid political traps, warning that her colleagues may attempt to discredit her or undermine her re-election bid in 2027.

For now, Natasha’s return signals resilience — but the road ahead remains bumpy as she balances her outspoken advocacy with the realities of a Senate dominated by compromise and power plays.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
