NBA BACKS QUICK DISPENSATION OF JUSTICE IN DELTA

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Delta State Chapter, has thrown its weight behind efforts to ensure quick dispensation of justice in the state, calling for the strengthening of the judicial system to reduce delays and enhance access to justice.

The NBA Chairman in Delta State, Mr. Oghenero Okorodudu, made the call on Friday during the association’s quarterly general meeting in Asaba. He emphasised the need for judicial officers, lawyers, and other stakeholders to work together to clear the backlog of cases and improve the efficiency of the courts.

“The NBA is fully in support of quick dispensation of justice. Justice delayed is justice denied. We must address the bottlenecks that cause unnecessary delays in our courts,” Okorodudu stated.

The association proposed several measures, including the adoption of virtual court hearings, increased recruitment of judicial staff, and the provision of modern infrastructure to support the judiciary. It also called for the timely appointment and promotion of judges to fill existing vacancies.

The Delta State Chief Judge, Justice Tessy Diai, who was represented at the meeting, assured the NBA of the judiciary’s commitment to speedy justice delivery. She noted that the state judiciary has been implementing several reforms to improve case management and reduce the time spent on litigation.

Legal practitioners and litigants have welcomed the NBA’s position, noting that delays in the justice system have led to loss of confidence among the public. They urged both the judiciary and the bar to collaborate more effectively in addressing the challenges.

The NBA also used the forum to sensitise its members on the importance of professional ethics and the need to avoid actions that could bring the legal profession into disrepute.

As Delta State continues to attract investment and development, the quick dispensation of justice is seen as critical to maintaining law and order and creating a conducive environment for business and governance. The NBA’s renewed focus on this issue is expected to contribute to a more efficient and reliable judicial system in the state.
