The Nigerian Bar Association’s Akure Branch has urged the Ondo State Government to assign more lawyers to the Amotekun Corps to improve the handling of criminal cases.

The association said additional legal officers from the Ministry of Justice would help review proposed charges and court documents before cases are filed.

In a communiqué released on Tuesday, the branch said the measure would promote compliance with legal requirements and protect the rights of suspects and others involved.

The statement, signed by Chairman Oju Kekemeke and Secretary Oluwanike Omotayo, followed the branch’s monthly meeting in Akure.

The lawyers also raised concerns about the state judiciary’s electronic filing system, saying it still required physical copies after documents had been uploaded and payments made online.

They called for a fully electronic process, recommending that court registries print uploaded documents whenever paper copies were needed for court records or service.

The branch further requested that urgent ex parte applications be exempted from mandatory electronic filing.

It said it would seek discussions with the Chief Judge, senior lawyers and former branch chairmen to address the concerns.

Amotekun operates alongside conventional security agencies in efforts to tackle kidnapping and other crimes in the South-West.
