NBC WARNS BROADCASTERS OVER BIAS, BULLYING AND CODE VIOLATIONS AHEAD OF 2027 ELECTIONS

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has issued a strong warning to presenters and broadcasters across the country over rising cases of bias, bullying, and violations of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.

In a statement released via its official communication channels, the commission expressed concern over what it described as a decline in professionalism among broadcast anchors, especially in news and political programmes.

According to the commission, some presenters have been found expressing personal opinions as facts, failing to balance opposing views, and allowing inflammatory content on air, actions it says directly breach broadcasting standards.

The NBC stressed that any presenter who bullies guests, denies fair hearing, or presents opinion as fact would be considered guilty of a Class B breach under the broadcasting code.

It further reminded broadcasters that editorial responsibility rests entirely with stations, even during live programmes, and cannot be shifted to guests or contributors.

The commission also raised concerns about the misuse of broadcast platforms by political actors, warning that some content being aired could incite unrest, spread hate speech, or threaten national unity.

With the 2027 general elections approaching, NBC said it will enforce strict compliance with broadcasting regulations, adding that violations will attract sanctions without exception.

It urged broadcasters to prioritize accuracy, fairness, and professionalism, stressing that the airwaves must remain a tool for credible information rather than a platform for misinformation or tension.

NBC concluded by calling on media houses to uphold ethical standards and contribute to a peaceful and responsible electoral process in the country.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
