Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a Chinese grandmother at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, with a large quantity of illicit drugs.

The elderly woman was intercepted during routine screening of passengers arriving from China. NDLEA officials said she concealed a significant consignment of hard drugs in her luggage.

According to the agency, the suspect, who is in her 70s, is being held for further investigation. The exact type and quantity of the seized drugs have not been publicly disclosed, but sources say it was one of the notable seizures at the airport in recent months.

The NDLEA spokesperson described the arrest as a clear indication that drug traffickers are now using elderly persons as couriers in an attempt to evade detection. He warned that no one would be spared in the fight against drug trafficking.

This latest arrest adds to the growing number of foreigners caught trying to smuggle drugs into Nigeria through Lagos airport. The agency has intensified its operations at all entry points as part of efforts to curb the influx of illicit substances into the country.

The suspect is expected to be charged to court once investigations are concluded. NDLEA officials say they are working to trace the source and intended recipients of the consignment.

The agency appealed to travellers to avoid being used as drug mules, warning that anyone caught trafficking drugs will face the full wrath of the law, regardless of age or nationality.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
