The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kano has intercepted a major drug haul after a car crash along the Zaria–Kano highway on Saturday, September 6.

According to a statement by NDLEA spokesperson Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari, operatives recovered 150 blocks and three sacks of cannabis sativa, weighing a total of 112kg, from a Volkswagen Golf involved in the accident.

The crash occurred around 6 a.m. near Gadar Tamburawa, when the Golf collided with a truck. NDLEA officers, who were nearby, rushed to rescue the occupants.

“Officers immediately rushed to the scene to render first aid and effect rescues. They removed the windscreen and a window of the Golf to extricate the driver and forced open the other door to remove the passenger,” the statement said.

However, the passenger attempted to flee but was swiftly apprehended.

A search of the vehicle uncovered the large stash of cannabis. The driver reportedly confessed to working for a consignor and admitted to making previous deliveries within and outside Kano, often using one-way routes to evade NDLEA checkpoints.

The driver is now under investigation while receiving medical treatment, while the truck driver sustained a fracture from the collision.

The NDLEA stressed that the case involved two serious offenses: reckless driving and drug trafficking, warning the public to shun narcotics and report suspicious movements.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
