Starting June 8, Nigerians will face new pricing for driver’s licences and vehicle number plates following an official update.

The Joint Tax Board (JTB), Nigeria’s top tax coordination body, explained in May that the price revision is due to enhanced security features incorporated into the driver’s licences and number plates, as well as increased production expenses.

The updated fees are as follows:

Driver’s Licence Fees:

  • Motor Vehicle Driver’s Licence:
  • 3-year licence: ₦15,000
  • 5-year licence: ₦21,000
  • Tricycle Driver’s Licence:
  • 3-year licence: ₦7,000
  • 5-year licence: ₦11,000

Number Plate Fees:

  • Standard Number Plates:
  • Private and commercial vehicles: ₦30,000
  • Government vehicles: ₦80,000
  • Fancy Number Plates:
  • Private vehicles: ₦400,000
  • Government vehicles: ₦120,000
  • Other Number Plates:
  • Articulated vehicle: ₦90,000
  • Dealer vehicle: ₦100,000
  • Out of season: ₦150,000
  • Motorcycle: ₦12,000
  • Fancy motorcycle: ₦50,000
  • Government standard motorcycle: ₦20,000
  • Government fancy motorcycle: ₦50,000

The JTB has instructed all relevant government agencies and motor vehicle licensing authorities to enforce the new pricing structure. This is not the first adjustment of its kind; a similar revision was implemented in 2021 to accommodate rising production costs and upgraded security features.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
