Tragedy in Taraba: Newly Recruited Soldier Kills Police Officer Amid Local Dispute

A tragic incident unfolded in the Mayo-Goyi community, Jalingo, as a newly recruited soldier, Dauda Dedan, allegedly stabbed and killed a police officer, Aaron John, of the Taraba State Command.

The unfortunate event occurred on Monday, after residents alerted Officer John to a disturbance involving the soldier. According to the Taraba State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), the officer arrived at the scene to calm the situation but was fatally stabbed during the altercation.

The suspect is currently on the run, but the Nigerian Army’s 6 Brigade has launched an investigation and assured the police of full cooperation in tracking and arresting the fugitive soldier.

“We have reported the matter to the 6 Brigade headquarters, and they’ve assured us the suspect will be located and brought to justice,” said the PPRO.

Authorities also visited the soldier’s residence as part of their search efforts.

Despite the incident, the PPRO stressed that the relationship between the army and police remains cordial, and both security agencies are working closely to ensure justice is served.

The tragic loss has sent shockwaves through the community, with calls for improved handling of disputes involving uniformed personnel and more accountability within the armed forces.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
