NEWSWATCH FAMILY UNVEILS COMMEMORATIVE BOOK TO HONOUR SLAIN FOUNDING EDITOR-IN-CHIEF DELE GIWA ON 40TH MEMORIAL ANNIVERSARY
Media organization announces public presentation of "Dele Giwa's Granite Journalism," edited by Ray Ekpu, compiling celebrated writings and tributes four decades after the historic parcel bomb assassination in Lagos
Newswatch Plus Limited and the broader Newswatch media family have announced plans to launch a commemorative book titled "Dele Giwa's Granite Journalism" to mark the 40th anniversary of the assassination of the magazine’s founding Editor-in-Chief.
The unveiling ceremony is scheduled for Monday, October 19, 2026, at the Kensington Adebutu Auditorium of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism in Ogba, Ikeja, Lagos, exactly four decades after Giwa was killed by a parcel bomb at his Ikeja residence on October 19, 1986.
According to an official statement signed by the Editor-in-Chief of Newswatch Plus, Mr. Soji Akinrinade, the public book presentation will bring together media veterans, industry leaders, and civil society figures to celebrate Giwa's legacy and contributions to investigative journalism in Nigeria.
The volume, edited by veteran journalist and former Newswatch Chief Executive Ray Ekpu, features a comprehensive collection of Giwa's writings across his tenure at the Daily Times, Sunday Concord, and Newswatch magazine, alongside tributes from eminent peers and contemporaries.
Publisher of Vanguard Newspapers, Mr. Sam Amuka, is slated to chair the memorial presentation, which seeks to preserve Giwa's professional ethos and provide younger generations of reporters with direct insight into his analytical writing style.
Organizers noted that forty years after the unresolved tragedy, the publication serves as a lasting tribute to a media icon whose courageous reporting helped shape modern Nigerian press freedom.
