NIGER STATE GOVERNMENT SHUTS IBB UNIVERSITY INDEFINITELY AFTER SECURITY BREACHES, STUDENT’S DEATH
Minna – The Niger State Government has ordered the indefinite closure of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, following a series of security breaches and the recent death of a student.
The announcement was made in a statement by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Abubakar Usman, who cited the deteriorating security situation and the loss of a student’s life as key reasons for the shutdown.
“The decision became necessary due to recent security challenges and the tragic incident involving the loss of life within the university environment. The government prioritizes the safety and well-being of all citizens, especially students,” the statement said.
Usman expressed the government’s sorrow over the incident and assured that steps are being taken to tackle the situation. He urged members of the university community to remain calm, alert, and to support security efforts during the closure.
The shutdown follows rising concerns over student safety, particularly after a deadly armed robbery on Monday. Abdulwahab Jafar, a 200-level student, was fatally stabbed during an attack at his off-campus residence in the Ndakitabu area around 3 a.m. He was rushed to Lapai General Hospital but was confirmed dead on arrival.
The incident sparked protests by students, who blocked the Agaie-Lapai road, demanding improved security around the university and surrounding hostels.
Another robbery was reported on Tuesday in the Malagi area, which, though not fatal, intensified fears and further disrupted public order.
In response, the Lapai Emirate Council imposed a daily curfew from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Meanwhile, the state government announced the university’s indefinite closure as a precautionary measure to prevent further unrest and safeguard students.
Authorities also reaffirmed their commitment to investigating the attacks and bringing those responsible to justice. The university management is expected to issue additional directives to students and staff as the situation develops.
