NIGERIA CANNOT PROGRESS WITH POLITICS OF RIVALRY AND POLICY SUMMERSAULTS — BANIRE

Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former chairman of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria, Muiz Banire, has warned that Nigeria’s development will remain slow if political leaders continue to prioritise rivalry and inconsistent policies over national interest.

Banire stated that constant political battles, unhealthy competition among leaders and frequent policy reversals have continued to weaken governance, discourage investment and slow national growth.

According to him, sustainable development can only thrive in an environment where policies are stable, institutions are respected and governance is driven by continuity rather than personal or partisan conflicts.

He noted that many government programmes fail to achieve long-term impact because successive administrations often abandon existing projects and introduce entirely new agendas for political reasons.

Banire stressed that policy inconsistency creates uncertainty for businesses, investors and citizens, making long-term planning difficult across critical sectors of the economy.

The legal practitioner also expressed concern over the growing culture of political hostility in Nigeria, arguing that governance should focus more on collaboration and nation-building instead of endless power struggles.

He urged political leaders to place national progress above personal ambition and work towards policies capable of delivering lasting economic and institutional stability.

According to him, countries that have achieved meaningful development did so through continuity, strategic planning and collective commitment to national goals rather than divisive politics.

Banire’s comments add to ongoing conversations about governance reforms, economic direction and the future of political leadership in Nigeria.
