NIGERIA DEMANDS ACTION FROM SOUTH AFRICA OVER ATTACKS ON CITIZENS

Nigeria has called on South Africa to take urgent action following a wave of attacks and rising tensions affecting Nigerian citizens living in the country. The development has sparked fresh concerns about safety, xenophobia, and the protection of foreign nationals.

The Nigerian government formally urged South African authorities to ensure the safety of lives and property after reports confirmed that at least two Nigerians were killed in separate incidents linked to growing anti-foreigner sentiment.

Officials say the attacks are part of a broader pattern of hostility toward foreign nationals, particularly in major cities such as Johannesburg and Durban. In recent weeks, protests against illegal immigration have intensified, with some demonstrations escalating into intimidation, looting fears, and violence.

Reacting to the situation, Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized the need for immediate protection measures, describing the incidents as unacceptable and contrary to African unity and shared values. The government also stressed that Nigerians abroad are law-abiding and contribute positively to their host communities.

At the same time, diplomatic engagement between both countries has increased. Nigeria has reached out to South African authorities to push for investigations, accountability, and stronger safeguards for its citizens. Meanwhile, safety advisories have been issued to Nigerians in affected areas, urging caution and compliance with local laws.

The situation has also led to anxiety within the Nigerian community in South Africa, with some individuals considering returning home amid fears of further unrest. In fact, over 100 Nigerians have reportedly sought repatriation following recent protests targeting foreigners.

Despite the tensions, both governments have expressed a commitment to maintaining diplomatic ties and working together to resolve the crisis. South Africa has also pledged to address concerns around xenophobic violence and ensure better protection for all residents.

This latest development highlights a recurring challenge across parts of Africa balancing economic pressures, migration, and social cohesion. For many, the hope is that swift action and stronger cooperation will prevent further violence and reinforce the spirit of unity on the continent.
