As the 2027 presidential elections approach, Dr. Jibril Mustapha, the president of the Nigeria Rescue Mission Organization (NRMO) and former president of the Buhari Youth Organization (BYO), has appealed to former President Goodluck Jonathan to consider running for the office once again. In a statement released on Sunday, Mustapha emphasized that now is the time for Nigeria to rally behind a candidate who can address the country's pressing challenges.

"Nigeria is currently facing immense issues such as economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, and widespread banditry," Mustapha noted. "This is the critical moment for all Nigerians to come together and support a leader who genuinely represents the diverse interests of the nation."

Mustapha highlighted that the country needs a leader who values integrity, inclusivity, and national unity, someone who can unite Nigerians from all backgrounds. He pointed to Jonathan’s previous leadership as a model of democratic values and governance that prioritized the welfare of citizens. “Jonathan's time in office was marked by economic advancement and inclusivity, which are qualities essential for bringing Nigeria back to its rightful place both internationally and domestically,” Mustapha added.

The former president’s eligibility has been a topic of legal debate, particularly after his loss to President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2015 election. In 2022, the Federal High Court in Bayelsa ruled that Jonathan is eligible to run for the presidency again, affirming that his previous terms in office did not disqualify him from seeking a return to the presidential seat. The court’s decision declared that no retroactive law could prevent Jonathan from contesting in future elections.

Mustapha’s appeal adds to a growing call within certain political circles for Jonathan to step forward as a candidate. With the 2027 elections fast approaching, the nation’s focus now turns to whether Jonathan will heed the call and make a return to politics. His leadership, known for its emphasis on economic growth and national unity, may hold the potential to guide Nigeria through its current challenges.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
