NIGERIA SHOULD AMEND, NOT SCRAP CURRENT CONSTITUTION – ABBA MORO
Senate Minority Leader and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Abba Moro, has argued that Nigeria should focus on amending its current constitution rather than completely replacing it.
Speaking on the ongoing calls for a total constitutional overhaul, Moro said the 1999 Constitution—despite its military origin—remains a “live document” that can be improved to better serve the nation.
He recalled that the 2014 National Conference, convened under former President Goodluck Jonathan, made strong recommendations such as the devolution of power. However, the final report was never implemented. Moro pointed out that current constitutional reform discussions are repeating many of the same proposals.
“A country’s constitution should be continuously refined. Sections that infringe on basic human rights should be removed, and missing but essential elements should be included,” he said.
The lawmaker also questioned the legitimacy of groups now calling for a total rewrite, noting that the 2014 conference involved nominated representatives from across the country, while the current advocates for a complete overhaul have unclear mandates.
Moro maintained that gradual and deliberate amendments—supported by strong political will—offer a better path to creating a near-perfect constitution than starting afresh.
“It’s time we accept what we have, work on it, and move closer to the perfection we desire,” he added.
