NIGERIA, TANZANIA, ETHIOPIA LEAD AFRICA ELECTRIFICATION SURGE – REPORT

Nigeria, Tanzania, and Ethiopia have emerged as the leading countries driving Africa’s electrification efforts, according to a new report on energy access across the continent.

The report highlights significant progress in grid expansion, off-grid solutions, and renewable energy adoption in the three nations, which accounted for a substantial portion of new electricity connections in Africa over the past year. Nigeria’s aggressive rural electrification projects and mini-grid deployments were particularly noted for their scale and impact.

Tanzania and Ethiopia also recorded impressive gains through public-private partnerships, solar home systems, and national grid extensions that have brought power to millions of previously unserved households. “These countries are setting the pace for the continent’s energy transition,” the report stated.

Experts attribute the surge to policy reforms, increased investment in clean energy, and innovative financing models. However, the report cautions that challenges such as funding gaps, infrastructure deficits, and population growth continue to hinder universal access goals.

Stakeholders have called for sustained international support and knowledge sharing to replicate successes across other African nations. The findings underscore the critical role of electricity in driving economic development, education, and healthcare on the continent.
