NIGERIAN CORPORATES RAISE N1.51TR FROM COMMERCIAL PAPER IN NINE MONTHS
Nigerian companies raised a total of N1.51 trillion through commercial paper issuances in nine months, highlighting the growing use of alternative financing channels by businesses seeking to meet their funding needs.
Commercial paper is a short-term debt instrument that companies use to raise funds for working capital, operational expenses and other immediate financial obligations. It provides businesses with an alternative to traditional bank loans, particularly when they need quicker access to financing.
The reported fundraising reflects the role of Nigeria’s domestic debt market in helping companies mobilise capital amid changing economic conditions. Businesses across different sectors require adequate funding to manage rising operating costs, maintain production and support expansion plans.
For corporates, commercial paper can offer greater flexibility in managing short-term cash flow requirements. Depending on prevailing market conditions, issuers may also find it attractive when compared with other available sources of financing.
However, the cost of raising funds through commercial paper depends on factors such as interest rates, investor demand, the issuer’s creditworthiness and the prevailing economic environment. Companies must also ensure they can meet repayment obligations when the instruments mature.
The increase in demand for alternative financing options comes as businesses navigate inflationary pressures, high borrowing costs and the need to maintain liquidity. Access to the capital market can help eligible companies diversify their funding sources and reduce their reliance on conventional bank lending.
For investors, commercial paper provides an opportunity to earn returns by lending to corporate issuers over relatively short periods. Nevertheless, investors must assess the credit risk associated with each issuer and consider the possibility of delayed repayment or default.
The N1.51 trillion raised during the nine-month period underscores the importance of Nigeria’s debt market as a source of corporate funding. Sustaining this channel will depend on investor confidence, transparent disclosures, credible credit assessments and stable market conditions.
As companies continue to seek financing for their operations, commercial paper is likely to remain an important instrument for managing short-term funding needs and supporting business activity.
