NIGERIAN MASTER’S STUDENT DIES IN UK AFTER SUDDEN CANCER COMPLICATION

A Nigerian student in the United Kingdom, identified as Hammed, has tragically passed away following a sudden deterioration in his health due to advanced cancer.

The news of his death was shared via a GoFundMe campaign created by Mariam Ajibola and Mohammed Chaanda on behalf of Piety Mosque. The fundraiser, which initially sought financial support for Hammed’s medical care, was updated to request assistance for his burial after his condition worsened.

Hammed, a 36-year-old Lagos resident originally from Ayete in Oyo State, moved to the UK in September last year to pursue a Master’s degree in Business and Management at the University of Plymouth. Despite being diagnosed with cancer earlier this year, he persevered through the physical and emotional challenges to complete his academic programme.

Described as the youngest of four children, Hammed was known for his warmth, friendliness, and generosity, earning him the reputation of the “joyful heart” of his home.

Plans to fly him back to Nigeria to spend his final moments with family were abandoned after doctors ruled that he was not medically stable enough to travel. With repatriation no longer possible, the organisers turned to the public to help ensure he received a dignified burial in the UK.

“We are raising funds to give Hammed a dignified burial,” the statement read, noting that contributions would ease the burden on his grieving family.

The fundraiser surpassed its target of £5,000 for a 50-year burial plot and coffin, reaching over £6,000 as of Sunday, prompting organisers to pause further donations.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
