NIGERIAN STOCK MARKET INVESTORS LOSE N2.21TN IN FOUR-DAY BEARISH RUN
Investors on the Nigerian Exchange recorded a cumulative loss of N2.205 trillion over four trading sessions, as the market ended the week in negative territory.
On Friday alone, market value declined by N475 billion, marking the fourth straight day of losses within the week.
Breakdown of the losses showed that investors shed N1.141 trillion on Tuesday, followed by N74 billion on Wednesday, N515 billion on Thursday, and N475 billion on Friday.
The sustained downturn was attributed to continued profit-taking in major heavyweight stocks, alongside a 50-basis-point interest rate cut by the Central Bank of Nigeria, which reduced the rate to 26.5 percent during the review period.
Market capitalisation slipped from N124.238 trillion at the start of Friday’s session to N123.763 trillion at the close, reflecting a 0.38 percent decline, equivalent to N475 billion.
In the same vein, the All-Share Index dropped by 0.38 percent, losing 741.03 points to settle at 192,826.78, down from 193,567.81 in the previous session.
The year-to-date return also eased to 23.91 percent.
Despite the overall bearish performance, market breadth remained positive on Friday, with 39 gainers outperforming 25 losers.
Sovereign Trust Insurance led the gainers’ table with a 9.95 percent increase to close at N2.21. Other notable advancers included RT Briscoe, NGX Group, Ellah Lakes, and Omatek.
On the losers’ side, Mecure topped the chart after declining by 9.97 percent to close at N75.85. It was followed by Meyer, Daar Communications, Champion Breweries, and Dangote Cement.
Trading activity also slowed, with total volume traded falling by 5.15 percent to 823.83 million shares valued at N34.75 billion across 63,759 deals.
Fortis Global Insurance recorded the highest volume of trades with 146.62 million shares, accounting for 17.80 percent of the day’s total volume.
Aradel led in value terms, posting transactions worth N7.14 billion, which represented 20.54 percent of the total value traded for the day.
