NIGERIANS ABROAD URGE GOVERNMENT TO ADDRESS PASSPORT AND NIN DELAYS

Nigerians living overseas are urging the government to take immediate measures to address ongoing difficulties in obtaining National Identification Numbers (NIN) and Nigerian passports abroad.

The call was made by Diaspora groups including the International Advocacy for Human Rights and Anti-Corruption (IAHRAC), Concerned Nigerians in Germany, and the Nigeria Business Forum in Switzerland. The organisations stressed the need for urgent intervention to tackle delays in NIN and passport processing.

In a joint statement on Monday, signed by Okoro Akinyemi of IAHRAC, Lewis Ehiwario of Concerned Nigerians, and Dozie Ugochokwu of the Nigeria Business Forum, the groups said their appeal followed the release of a detailed report in Abuja. The report, which highlighted challenges faced by Nigerians overseas, was based on extensive consultations with Diaspora communities across Europe and North America.

According to the statement, the study was part of a strategic meeting and cross-country survey aimed at identifying recurring obstacles and documenting shared experiences among Nigerians abroad.

“Nigerians overseas often face lengthy delays and additional travel burdens when attempting to obtain or verify their NIN. Many applicants encounter systemic hurdles that make timely processing extremely challenging,” the statement said.

The groups urged the government to digitalise and modernise both the NIN and passport systems, calling for increased funding for foreign missions, upgraded equipment, more staff, and clearer immigration procedures.

They emphasised that Nigerians abroad should be able to access both NIN and passport services simultaneously at embassies to minimise duplication, stress, and logistical challenges.

“Embassies need robust digital infrastructure to manage rising service demands and expanded responsibilities,” the statement added.

Highlighting findings from the Diaspora survey, the groups raised concerns about the current NIN registration process. They pointed out that reliance on private agents has led to inconsistent procedures, high fees, and widespread dissatisfaction among Nigerians seeking identification services abroad.

“Irregular charges, unpredictable processing timelines, and limited oversight have heightened concerns about potential exploitation,” the statement said.

The groups called for a secure, fully digital NIN system accessible to Nigerians worldwide without intermediaries. They also recommended that embassies and consulates directly handle NIN and passport services and suggested the establishment of mobile registration units in major global cities to ease travel burdens for applicants.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
