NIGERIA’S EXPORTS HIT $1.2BN AS CONTAINER THROUGHPUT SURGES
Nigeria’s non-oil exports have reached $1.2 billion in the first half of 2026, supported by a significant surge in container throughput at major ports, according to data from the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).
The increase in container volumes reflects improved efficiency at the ports, better logistics, and growing demand for Nigerian goods in international markets. NPA Managing Director, Mr. Abubakar Dantsoho, attributed the performance to ongoing reforms and infrastructure upgrades. “Our ports are becoming more competitive, and this is translating into higher export earnings,” he said.
Key export commodities driving the growth include agricultural produce, solid minerals, and manufactured goods. Analysts believe the momentum could be sustained if challenges such as forex availability and infrastructure bottlenecks are addressed.
The development is seen as a positive sign for Nigeria’s economic diversification efforts and a boost for the non-oil sector.
Stakeholders have called for continued investment in port modernisation to further enhance trade facilitation and export performance.
