Mrs. Uchechi Kanu, wife of detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has denied reports that she has filed for divorce from her husband.

In a statement released on Friday, Mrs. Kanu described the circulating rumours as “malicious and completely false,” aimed at causing disaffection within the family and the IPOB movement. She reaffirmed her commitment to her husband and vowed to stand by him throughout his ongoing legal battle.

“I have not filed for divorce and have no intention of doing so. Nnamdi is my husband, and I will continue to support him and our family. These rumours are the handiwork of detractors who want to weaken our resolve,” Mrs. Kanu stated.

The denial comes after a viral social media post claimed that Mrs. Kanu had approached the court to dissolve her marriage due to prolonged separation and personal differences. The post had generated significant discussion and concern among supporters of the IPOB leader.

Mrs. Kanu urged the public to disregard the false information and focus on praying for her husband’s release and the success of the Biafran cause. She also called on well-wishers to continue supporting the family during this challenging period.

Nnamdi Kanu has been in detention since 2021, facing charges related to treasonable felony and terrorism. His trial has been a subject of intense legal and political debate, with his supporters demanding his unconditional release.

The IPOB leadership also dismissed the divorce rumour as propaganda intended to distract from the core issues of self-determination and justice. The organisation called on members to remain united and ignore attempts to sow discord within the movement.

The clarification by Mrs. Kanu is expected to put an end to the speculation and refocus attention on the legal efforts to secure Nnamdi Kanu’s freedom.
