The National Publicity Secretary of the New Nigeria People’s Party, Ladipo Johnson, has resigned from the party amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Johnson announced his resignation in a letter dated May 4, 2026, addressed to the chairman of NNPP Ward G1 (Shitta/Ogunlana Ward) in Surulere Local Government Area of Lagos State.

In the letter, he said his resignation takes immediate effect, citing the need for “a broader national realignment of the opposition.”

“I am writing to formally resign my membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), effective immediately,” he stated.

Johnson thanked the party for giving him the opportunity to serve in various capacities, including as National Auditor and later National Publicity Secretary.

“It has been a distinct honour to serve our party at the highest levels. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to have contributed my quota to our collective vision,” he wrote.

He also expressed appreciation to members of the party’s National Working Committee for their support and collaboration during his tenure.

Explaining the reason behind his departure, Johnson said the current political climate requires opposition groups to unite under a broader platform.

“This decision stems from my conviction that the current political climate necessitates a broader national realignment of the opposition,” he said.

Although he did not officially announce his next political destination, sources within the NNPP indicated that he may join the Nigeria Democratic Congress alongside former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso and other Kwankwasiyya leaders.

A party source said Johnson’s move was expected due to his longstanding political relationship with Kwankwaso.

The resignation comes days after former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and Kwankwaso formally joined the NDC in Abuja as part of efforts to build a united opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.

According to Obi, the move was aimed at creating “a peaceful political platform devoid of internal crises.”

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
