NO IMPOSITION OF CANDIDATES IN ONDO APC — REP
A member of the House of Representatives from Ondo State, Mr Derin Adesida, has expressed confidence that the forthcoming primaries of the All Progressives Congress will not allow any form of imposition of candidates, whether through consensus or direct primary.
Adesida, who represents the Akure North/Akure South Federal Constituency, said both modes of primary are acceptable, noting that they are designed to produce the most popular aspirants as party candidates for the general election.
He stated this in Akure while speaking with journalists after obtaining his expression of interest and nomination forms ahead of the party’s primaries scheduled for later this month.
He explained that consensus only works when all aspirants agree, stressing that any form of dissent automatically nullifies the process, while direct primaries involve all registered party members.
According to him, the direct primary system makes it difficult to manipulate outcomes since all party members participate in choosing candidates.
He added that popularity remains the key factor in such a system, as aspirants must present themselves to the people for acceptance rather than rely on influence.
The lawmaker also disclosed that his nomination forms were purchased for him by supporters, describing the gesture as a strong encouragement to seek another term.
He noted that he was initially not interested in returning to the House for a third term but changed his mind following pressure and support from constituents.
As preparations for the APC primaries continue in Ondo State, the party is yet to officially announce the mode of primary it will adopt, though indications suggest a possible preference for direct primaries.
