NO NIGERIAN PLAYERS SHORTLISTED AS 2026 BALLON D’OR WINNER SET TO EMERGE IN LONDON
70th edition of global football awards hosted at London Palladium with Harry Kane, Lamine Yamal, and Kylian Mbappé leading 30-man nominee list
No Nigerian footballer made the final shortlist as the winner of the 2026 Men's Ballon d’Or is set to be crowned tonight during the 70th edition of the awards ceremony at the London Palladium.
Organized jointly by France Football and UEFA, the 2026 ceremony marks a historic departure from tradition as the event is hosted outside Paris for the first time, paying tribute to the inaugural 1956 winner Sir Stanley Matthews. Nigerian international stars, including Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, were omitted from the 30-man nominee list following the 2025–26 campaign evaluation window.
Bayern Munich forward Harry Kane, Barcelona prodigy Lamine Yamal, and Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé are among the leading contenders positioning for football’s most prestigious individual honour. The shortlist also features reigning holder Ousmane Dembélé, alongside past recipient Lionel Messi, Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, and Real Madrid winger Vinícius Júnior.
The ceremony will also present accolades for the Women's Ballon d'Or, the Kopa Trophy for best young player, the Yashin Trophy for top goalkeeper, and the Sócrates Award for humanitarian contributions, with official rankings and winners announced before the global football audience.
